 News for Immediate Release

May 1, 2022

First Pontoon Tour of the Season This Sunday at Sinnemahoning State Park

Pontoon tours are back at Sinnemahoning State Park!  Get out on the water for the first tour of the season, and cruise the shoreline of the George B. Stevenson Reservoir. Look for wildlife, learn about the history of the dam, and enjoy being out on the lake on a 1-hour guided tour. In past years, tour participants have seen eagles, turtles, and ducks all from the breezy deck of the pontoon boat.

The first tour of 2022 will be this Sunday, May 8th, with departures at 9 AM, 10:30 AM and 12 PM. Tours last approximately one hour. Meet at the boat ramp at the Lake Day Use Area.

There is no fee for regular Sunday guided pontoon boat tours, but donations are requested.  Please note that group size is limited and pre-registration is strongly recommended to reserve a seat. To pre-register, visit https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/sinnemahoning_state_park/calendar or call the park office at 814-647-8401 ext. 0 for the front desk.

Tours will continue to be offered on most Sundays and other selected dates throughout the season, with three tours offered on each date.

If you need an accommodation to participate in PA State Park activities due to a disability, please contact the park you plan to visit.  With at least seven days’ notice, interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available for educational programs.

For more information about programs at Sinnemahoning State Park, please call the park office at 814-647-8401.

Austin Pinewood Derby Race

News for Immediate Release

February 21, 2022

Public Invited to Attend Pinewood Derby on Sunday

Austin, PA

Austin Cub Scout Pack 524 invites the public to attend their Pinewood Derby Race and Cake Auction which will be held on Sunday, February 27th, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm in the gymnasium of the Austin Area School.

The pinewood derby is the wood car racing event of Scouts BSA. With the help of adults, scouts design, build, and decorate their own unpowered, unmanned miniature cars from wood, from kits containing a block of pine wood, plastic wheels, and metal axles.

Through the process of building and racing the car, the Cub Scout experiences a sense of accomplishment and the excitement of competition, while learning good sportsmanship and having fun.  By attending the race, the community can support this process and encourage the children in their efforts.

The annual cake auction will be held in conjunction with the pinewood derby on Sunday. Each scout, with the help of a caring adult, will bake and decorate a cake to be sold, auction-style, with proceeds to help pay for summer camp for the cub scouts.

All members of the community are welcome to attend this event on Sunday, February 27th, which begins at 5:30 pm in the school gymnasium.  Derby car weigh-in will begin at 5:00 pm.

For more information about the event, please contact Cubmaster, Deb Barr, at 814-558-7531.
