Main Street Austin, Pennsylvania Today

Today is Sunday, February 1, 2015.

These pictures were taken around noon today.

The pictures were taken and posted for all the Facebook Friends who have friended me in the last three (3) months who are either former Austin Area School District Students, friends of former Austin Area School District Students, or, individuals who have an interest in Austin, Pennsylvania, The Town Too Tough To Die.

The pictures will be posted proceeding west on Route 607 from the T-intersection of  Roue 607/Route 872, right-hand side of Main Street

The old Bank Building which survived both the 1911 and 1942 floods.

I am back at the T-intersection of Route 607/872 and will post pictures on the left side of Main Street.
Paul Perry Enterprises. Formerly Gaelotti's Fine Italian Restaurant

Building owned by Bub Crosby.  Formerly owned by Danny Gaelotti.  Mr. Crosby bought the building this past summer.  He and his daughter, Rhonda, have spent many hours fixing up the inside and making it a very attractive addition to Main Street.  They currently are storing vehicles during the winter months in the back of the building. Unfortunately, the windows are coated with a thin layer of ice and we can't see inside.

Harry Long's Cafe

Harry Long's Laundromat

NOTE:  Both of these businesses are for sale as Mr. Long has health issues.

Historically Significant Borough Council Meeting Tuesday Night

The Austin Borough Council will meet Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fire Hall on Main Street.

Most certainly, the Agreement presented to the Borough containing a clause restricting the use of the former Northwest Saving Bank building at 21 Turner Street will be discussed.

The Agreement contains the following restriction:

FURTHER,  however, it is agreed that neither the said party of the second part nor the heirs, successors or assigns of the party of the second part shall or will erect, or cause or suffer to be erected, or use or cause or suffer to be used on any portion of said premises for any bank, savings and loan, credit union, or any consumer discount company purposes.

Accepting the terms of the Agreement presented to the Borough of Austin will obviously slow our Community's recovery from a disastrous 2014.

I encourage everyone, young and old, to attend this meeting.  Costello and Wharton, if you had banked with the Northwest Savings Bank Branch on Turner Street in Austin, you are welcome also.

Borough Council Meets Tuesday, February 3, 2015

The Austin Borough Council will hold it's February meeting this Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fire Hall on Main Street.

One of the matters that will be discussed is the acceptance or rejection of a proposed Agreement transferring the former Northwest Savings Bank Property to the Austin Borough containing the following statement:

It is stipulated and agreed by the Borough of Austin, for itself, its successors and assigns that, said premises above described being Parcel #030-002-048, will not be used for any bank, savings and loan or any consumer discount company purposes

Accepting the Agreement including this statement will obviously hinder the Community of Austin in obtaining another financial institution to locate here.

10 YEARS OF SUCCESS ON ROUTE 6

Ten years ago, Governor Edward Rendell formally recognized the section of US Route 6 in Pennsylvania for its transportation heritage and history of moving resources and people across the Commonwealth. On January 15, 2005, the PA Route 6 Heritage Corridor became the 12th Pennsylvania Heritage Area.

Long considered a popular driving destination and favorite American road-trip, approximately 3.5 million people travel the 427 miles of US Route 6 and 6N each year to visit the historic sites, national and state parks, artist studios, and quaint towns that resonate that authentic American feel. Those travelers spend over $91 million as they enjoy the scenic overlooks and breathtaking views.

"Much has been accomplished in the last ten years," PA Route 6 Alliance Executive Director Terri Dennison said. "Being a scenic driving destination requires efforts to ensure that the roadway, the communities and the landscape all live up to the promise of an enjoyable road-trip while celebrating the local heritage and culture that make this a special highway."

The PA Route 6 Heritage Corridor is managed by the PA Route 6 Alliance, a 501(c3) organization representing private and public organizations, county and local officials, and interested stakeholders throughout the eleven counties link by the scenic highway: Crawford, Erie, Warren, McKean, Potter, Tioga, Bradford, Wyoming, Lackawanna,Wayne and Pike. The Alliance's mission is  focused on efforts to preserve, enhance and promote the transportation heritage of one of the nation's first transcontinental highways; to sustain and enhance the small rural communities linked by the highway; and to preserve and enhance the natural, scenic beauty of one of America's favorite "road trips".  Read more...
